Fun With Numbers: 2012 Olympic Medals per Capita

Now that the 2012 Olympic Games in London are over and all the medals have been handed out to the various athletes from around the world, you’ve probably had a minute to look over the medals that have been won.  If you’re from the United States, you’re probably patting yourself on the back, think that the good old USA is home to the best athletes in the world, but are they?

It could be said that the US really gets the most amount of Olympic medals, not because we have the best athletes, but because we send the most athletes to the games.  To level the playing field a bit, and for a bit of fun, we quickly calculated a new set of numbers… Total Medals per Capita and Gold Medals per Capita (Note: to keep this from becoming too much of an eye chart, we only listed those countries that received any medal at all).

With that information, Grenada, who really only had one medal, but the smallest population for any medal taker, looks to be the most athletic country in the world. Next is Jamica, which actually isn’t very surprising, but where is the US? China? India? The three largest countries in the world by population? WAY down the list… hmmmmm.

Does this really prove anything? Who knows! Our point here is, sometimes in internet marketing and advertising (that is what this blog is really about), it’s easy to get lost in the wrong numbers when determining the winners and losers for various aspects of your campaign.  So, don’t just jump at those that but your own choices for winners and losers in the best light, but instead, but those that are the most important for your business.

Anyway, take a look at our findings and see what you think… is there another way to determine which country has the best athletes?
