Those beloved words are once again ringing out in Major League Baseball stadiums all across America.
Yes, the 2014 MLB season is upon us. And hope springs eternal for each and every one of the 30 teams in baseball’s biggest league.
Well…almost all 30 teams.
Whether you’re a die-hard baseball fan or a more casual observer, you’ve probably at least heard about the concept of “Moneyball.” Based on a popular book by Michael Lewis that was later turned into a well-received film starring Brad Pitt, “Moneyball” is a clever, creative approach that the cash-strapped Oakland Athletics and their innovative general manager and vice president Billy Beane have used to compete with baseball’s free-spending heavyweights like the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers.
In fact, the “Moneyball” approach and its implementation have enabled the Athletics (also known as the A’s) to not only compete, but to win. And to often win big.
The A’s entered the 2014 MLB season as back-to-back defending champions of the competitive American League West, having topped both the Angels and Rangers – and their high-dollar, star-studded rosters – to claim the AL West pennant in both 2013 and 2012. In the process, the A’s managed to win 96 and 94 games en route to consecutive postseason appearances.
The A’s also began this season with yet another low-level payroll. At just over $60.3 million in total player salaries this season, there are only three MLB teams with lower total payrolls. And both the Angels ($127.9 million) and Rangers ($112.9 million) rank among the league’s top 11 highest payrolls.
Of course, the success of the “Moneyball” approach on MLB diamonds the past several years has led to a realization among leaders in many other industries and organizations that intelligent metrics, creative thinking and smart implementation can translate to “wins” in areas outside of baseball.
